It is well known that installing and removing programs or simply moving files from one place to another will fragment the hard drive. This will happen to anyone and it can slow down even the most powerful computer. This is why a defragmentation process is so important. All Windows versions come with a built in defragmentation utility. It has been available since the old days of Windows 95 and it is still essential today. During this last decade, defrag utilities have evolved, due to new and advanced technologies. Jwansoft Disk Defrag offers a good alternative to the standard defrag application which is included in the Windows package. It uses an effective defragmentation algorithm, it works faster and it provides other advantages as well.

The application is free and you can install it on Windows 2000 and all later editions. The installation process will take a few moments, due to the small size of the setup package. The software runs smoothly even on slower machines and there are no special requirements to meet.

Like other similar applications, Jwansoft Disk Defrag illustrates your disk space as a color coded grid. You can target one or more partitions or removable drives, by clicking their check boxes, above the grid. The options on the toolbar can be used to analyze the state of a partition, start defragmenting or to optimize the performance of the hard drive. You may opt for a fast or full optimization or a MTF (master file table) optimization.

Regardless of what type of optimization you want to select, the software still needs to analyze and defragment your disk first. These tasks are performed automatically, so you can just click one of the optimization options and leave your computer unattended, because the software will run all necessary tasks by itself. If you need to step out or leave the computer running over night, you may click an option to shut down the machine automatically when the process is complete. Alternatively, you may select other actions, like hibernate, log off, restart or sleep.
